Putonghua for Local CUHK Students
The University Programme Section at CLA offers the following Putonghua courses to local CUHK students:

Local CUHK students with Cantonese as their native language can sign up for one of our Putonghua courses according to their own language level. Students can self-enrol in CLCP2703 (Intermediate Putonghua) on CUSIS during the enrolment period. If you want to take CLCP1703 (Elementary Putonghua) or a higher-level Putonghua course, please take a placement test that is usually given in March, August, or October. Please keep an eye out for the messages that are sent out by the University every Friday or check the “University Programme Section News” page. Students can also call the University Programme office at 3943-8224 for enquiries.
Course List - General Putonghua Courses
CLCP1703
Elementary Putonghua
An elementary course designed for native Cantonese-speaking students who want to acquire basic knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin and enhance their communicative ability in Putonghua in daily situations.
Course contents focus on daily conversations. Through systematic training on consonants, vowels, tones, phonetic identification, and comparisons between Putonghua and Cantonese terminologies, students will gain knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin and be equipped with the skills to communicate with short phrases in Putonghua.
CLCP2703
Intermediate Putonghua
An intermediate course designed for native Cantonese-speaking students who have already acquired basic knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin and are able to conduct simple conversations in Putonghua in daily situations. The course aims to strengthen their knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin, improve pronunciation, and broaden vocabulary under different real-life settings. Students will be able to present their ideas in short connected utterances.
Course contents focus on students’ ability to speak under a variety of real-life settings and present ideas in short connected utterances. Activities conducted in class include training on pronunciation and evaluating differences between Putonghua and Cantonese expressions with reference to their communicative ability at paragraph level. Students will be able to understand and identify phrases spoken by native speakers and speakers with dialect accents.
CLCP3703
Advanced Putonghua
An advanced Putonghua course designed for students who have completed CLCP2703, CPTH2703, CPTH2001, or CPTH3001.
The course is targeted at students who have the capability to present ideas in short connected utterances. It will further build up their vocabulary list related to social daily real-life settings, especially developing their oral skills in delivering speeches at public occasions.
Course contents cover a number of social life topics. Through different real-life settings, students’ vocabulary will increase. Common pronunciation mistakes and differences between Putonghua and Cantonese words and phrases are included, which will allow students to present their ideas under a variety of circumstances, especially completing tasks in learning and working environments. Students will be able to handle any unexpected changes in social contexts and understand Putonghua with relatively strong accents.
