Cantonese and Putonghua Online Taster Courses

Introduction:

The University Programme Section at CLA offers a series of one-credit asynchronous Online Taster Courses for students who are interested in learning Cantonese and Putonghua (Mandarin) at their own pace. Students will learn in a low-pressure environment by watching prerecorded videos and completing online exercises. They will acquire a basic understanding of Cantonese/Putonghua upon completion of the course(s). These courses are ideal for students who would like to have a taste of language learning before taking a full 3-unit language course.

Course Structure:

13-15 class sessions in the form of prerecorded videos on KEEP.

Self-paced learning; around 12-15 hours required.

Assessment:

Assignment        80%

Participation      20%

Eligibility:

All CUHK undergraduate, postgraduate and exchange students who are beginners in Cantonese/Putonghua are welcome.

Cantonese Taster Course for CUHK International Students

This course is offered via asynchronous online mode via KEEP, a CUHK eLearning platform. Registration for this course should be done via KEEP rather than on CUSIS.

This taster course is designed for international CUHK students who are interested in learning Cantonese. Topics include daily conversations and social interactions.

Cantonese Taster Course for CUHK Mandarin-speaking Students

This course is offered via asynchronous online mode via KEEP, a CUHK eLearning platform. Registration for this course should be done via KEEP rather than on CUSIS.

This taster course is designed for Mandarin-speaking students who are interested in studying Cantonese. Topics include daily conversations and social interactions. Students will also be introduced to key differences between Putonghua and Cantonese.

Putonghua as a Second Language Taster Course for International Students

This course is offered via asynchronous online mode via KEEP, a CUHK eLearning platform. Registration for this course should be done via KEEP rather than on CUSIS.

This taster course is designed for international students who are interested in learning Putonghua and Chinese characters. Students will learn the Chinese characters found on signposts around the university campus and apply them in daily conversation in Putonghua. Students who are currently taking Putonghua at the elementary level may also find this course useful in enhancing their knowledge on Chinese characters.

This taster course is designed for local students who are interested in studying Putonghua at CUHK. Students will explore different scenarios of Putonghua in use through various multimedia sources. The course will demonstrate casual Putonghua, semi-formal Putonghua, and formal Putonghua in use. Course topics include: greetings, self-introductions, asking questions and expressing thanks.
